Evening of that Day: John 20:18-29

Second Sunday of Easter Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and she told them that he had said these things to her. 19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors were locked where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” 24 But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands an...

Whole Bones in a Shattered World: John 19:14-42

Good Friday It was about noon on the Preparation Day for the Passover. Pilate said to the Jewish leaders, "Here's your king."   15 The Jewish leaders cried out, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" Pilate responded, "What? Do you want me to crucify your king?" "We have no king except the emperor," the chief priests answered.   Then Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified. 16 The soldiers took Jesus prisoner.   17 Carrying his cross by himself, he went out to a place called Skull Place (in Aramaic, Golgotha).   18 That's where they crucified him—and two others with him, one on each side and Jesus in the middle. 19 Pilate had a public notice written and posted on the cross. It read "Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews."   20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city and it was written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek.   21 Therefore, the Jewish chief priests complain...

Propose: 1 John 4:7-21

Fifth Sunday of Easter 7-10  My beloved friends, let us continue to love each other since love comes from God. Everyone who loves is born of God and experiences a relationship with God. The person who refuses to love doesn’t know the first thing about God, because God is love—so you can’t know him if you don’t love. This is how God showed his love for us: God sent his only Son into the world so we might live through him. This is the kind of love we are talking about—not that we once upon a time loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they’ve done to our relationship with God. 11-12  My dear, dear friends, if God loved us like this, we certainly ought to love each other. No one has seen God, ever. But if we love one another, God dwells deeply within us, and his love becomes complete in us—perfect love! 13-16  This is how we know we’re living steadily and deeply in him, and he in us: He’s giv...

Re/born: Mark 16:1-8

Easter Sunday When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him.  2  And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb.  3  They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?”  4  When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back.  5  As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.  6  But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him.  7  But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.”  8  So they went out and fled ...
