Unconventional Saints: Leslie Foster: Numbers 27:1-11

Ordinary Time Then the daughters of Zelophehad came forward. Zelophehad was son of Hepher son of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh, of the clans of Manasseh, son of Joseph. The names of his daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.  2  They stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and all the congregation, at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying,  3  “Our father died in the wilderness; he was not among the congregation of those who gathered themselves together against the Lord in the congregation of Korah but died for his own sin, and he had no sons.  4  Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? Give to us a possession among our father’s brothers.” 5  Moses brought their case before the Lord.  6  And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,  7  “The daughters of Zelophehad are right in what they are saying; you shall indeed let ...

Great Anxiety and Vexation: 1 Samuel 1:4-20

Ordinary Time On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters;  5  but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb.  6  Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb.  7  So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat.  8  Her husband Elkanah said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?” 9  After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord.  10  She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. ...

Speaking Tenderly: Isaiah 40:1-11

Advent II 1  Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.  2  Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins.  3  A voice cries: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.  4  Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.  5  And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken." 6  A voice says, "Cry!" And I said, "What shall I cry?" All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field.  7  The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the LORD blows on it; surely the people are grass.  8  The grass withers, the flo...
